Staying Safe on Halloween

Ghosts and goblins aren’t the only scary things you and your children should be wary of on Halloween night – just a week away. Burning Jack-o-lanterns and nighttime trick-or-treating pose increased risks for burns, falls and other injuries. Here are tips from the American Red Cross that will help you keep accidents from ruining the fun:

  • Stick to sidewalks where possible, and look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective clothing to be visible to drivers in the dark – or at least put some reflective tape on that black witch costume!
  • Plan a route and share it with your family. Children and adults should stick together.
  • Carry a flashlight to illuminate the way.
  • Use face paint rather than masks that can cover your eyes.
  • Buy costumes made from flame-retardant materials, and keep clear of open flames.
  • Only visit homes that have the porch light on. Don’t enter a stranger’s home, but insist on accepting your treats at the door.
  • Parents, inspect your kids’ candy and discard any that are already open.
