Millions of Americans suffer from the joint pain, stiffness and loss of mobility associated with arthritis. Possible causes include genetics, obesity, injury and overuse. Though you may not be able to help your genes, the Arthritis Foundation says there are still some things you can do to protect your joints and decrease your chances of developing arthritis:
Maintain a healthy weight. More weight puts stress on your hips, knees, back and feet.
Get exercising. Strong muscles help prevent joints from rubbing together and wearing down cartilage. Be sure to wear proper safety equipment (helmets, wrist pads, etc.), and take it easy if you feel any pain.
Protect the joints in your neck, back and hips by standing up straight.
Use your biggest and strongest joints when doing heavy lifting or carrying, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
